Lucky Red Envelopes

LUCKY RED ENVELOPES (红包, hóngbāo)

HOW RED ENVELOPES ARE USED

During Chinese New Year, money is put inside red envelopes which are then handed out to younger generations by their parents, grandparents, relatives, and even close neighbours and friends. You can pick-up Red Envelopes from local business on Rose Street and participating city centre shops, bars and restaurants, then we encourage you to celebrate Chinese New Year by gifting this envelope to family or friends with some money inside for luck!

BRINGING LUCK FOR THE NEW YEAR

Red symbolises luck and good fortune in Chinese Culture. Anything with a four is best avoided because 四 (sì, four) sounds similar to 死 (sǐ, death). Good things are believed to come in pairs so even number (Except four) are better than odd – eight is a particularly lucky number!

The specially designed envelopes given out by business to be used as receipt pouches. These may also contain:

  • Special offers or discount vouchers from businesses
  • Robert Burns Poetry and Guide for Burns Night Celebrations
  • Chinese New Year and Good Will messages
  • Burns&Beyond Festival prizes – Burns&Beyond Concert Tickets hidden within a number of envelopes
